Eric Chelle Leaves Out Iheanacho, Arokodare from Super Eagles Unity Cup Squad

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has omitted forwards Kelechi Iheanacho and Tolu Arokodare from Nigeria’s squad for the upcoming Unity Cup tournament in London.

The decision comes despite Iheanacho’s impressive recent form for Scottish giants Celtic, where the striker has scored four goals in his last three matches. Many fans had expected the forward to make a return to the national team, but Chelle has chosen to continue rebuilding the squad with fresh options ahead of future international competitions.

Oseni and Durosinmi Earn Surprise Call-Ups

Instead of recalling Iheanacho, Chelle handed opportunities to emerging attackers Owen Oseni of Plymouth and Rafiu Durosinmi, who currently plays for Italian club Pisa.

Oseni’s inclusion is considered one of the biggest surprises in the squad announcement. However, reports suggest the coaching crew has been impressed with the striker’s pressing ability, movement, aggressive style of play, and overall work rate this season.

Durosinmi also retained the attention of the technical team despite struggling for consistency since joining Pisa in January. The striker had previously been included in Nigeria’s provisional squad for the Africa Cup of Nations but failed to make the final list.

Moffi Returns to Lead Attack

Terem Moffi has been recalled to the squad and is expected to lead Nigeria’s attack during the Unity Cup competition.

The forward recently celebrated a league title success during his loan spell at FC Porto and is likely to spearhead the Super Eagles frontline in the absence of Victor Osimhen.

Moffi missed Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign earlier after facing a lengthy period of inactivity following his exit from French club Nice amid reported issues with supporters.

Femi Azeez has also been included among the attacking options as Chelle continues to assess new talents and fringe players.

Nigeria Begin Title Defence Against Zimbabwe

Nigeria will begin their Unity Cup title defence against Zimbabwe, with a potential final clash awaiting against either India or Jamaica if the Super Eagles progress.

Chelle has repeatedly stated that the tournament will serve as an opportunity to evaluate emerging talents, fringe internationals, and standout players from the Nigeria Premier Football League.

The Unity Cup is expected to play an important role in helping the coach shape his preferred squad ahead of upcoming major international tournaments.
