World record holder Tobi Amusan will headline Nigeria’s team to the upcoming CAA Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana, as the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) unveiled a 45-athlete squad for the continental competition.
The championships are scheduled to take place from May 12 to May 17 at the University of Ghana Sports Complex, with Nigeria aiming for a strong medal haul through a combination of experienced stars and rising talents.
Amusan, Chukwuma Headline Women’s Team
Tobi Amusan remains the biggest name in Nigeria’s contingent and is expected to compete in the women’s 100m hurdles event alongside Adaobi Tabugbo and Janet Sunday.
The world-class hurdler will be joined by in-form sprinter Rosemary Chukwuma, who has emerged as one of the fastest female athletes this season.
Chukwuma, who missed the recent World Relays in Gaborone, has been listed for both the women’s 100m event and Nigeria’s 4x100m relay squad alongside Miracle Ezechukwu, Maria Thompson-Omokwe, and Tejiri Ugoh.
The women’s squad also includes experienced athletes such as quarter-miler Patience Okon-George, long jumper Ruth Usoro, and hammer throw specialist Oyesade Olatoye.
Ese Brume Missing from Squad
One of the biggest talking points from the AFN announcement is the absence of four-time African long jump champion Ese Brume from the team.
Former African discus champion Chioma Onyekwere was also left out after recently venturing into weightlifting ahead of preparations for the Commonwealth Games.
Their absence opens the door for younger athletes to step up on the continental stage.
Favour Ashe, Enekwechi Lead Men’s Team
On the men’s side, sprint sensation Favour Ashe and Africa’s top-ranked shot put athlete Chukwuebuka Enekwechi will spearhead Nigeria’s challenge in Accra.
The men’s sprint squad also features 2020 Olympic finalist Enoch Adegoke, Usheoritse Itsekiri, and reigning National Sports Festival champion Chidera Ezeakor.
Nigeria’s 400m and relay teams will rely on the experience of Samson Nathaniel, Emmanuel Ojeli, and Chidi Okezie as the country targets podium finishes across multiple events.
Nigeria Targets Strong Outing in Accra
With a blend of elite performers and emerging talents, Team Nigeria is expected to be among the strongest contenders at the African Athletics Championships.
The tournament will also serve as an important preparation platform for athletes ahead of major international competitions later in the season.
