English football has achieved a historic milestone after Premier League clubs reached the finals of all three major UEFA competitions in the same season for the very first time.
Arsenal, Aston Villa, and Crystal Palace secured places in the finals of the UEFA Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League respectively, marking a remarkable campaign for English clubs in Europe.
Arsenal Reach Champions League Final
Arsenal became the first English side to book their place in a European final after defeating Atletico Madrid 2-1 on aggregate in the Champions League semi-finals.
The Gunners will now compete for Europe’s biggest prize as they aim to win their first Champions League title.
Their qualification also ensured England would have representation in another major UEFA final after missing out last season when Arsenal were eliminated by eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals.
Aston Villa Storm into Europa League Final
Aston Villa followed Arsenal’s achievement with a stunning comeback victory in the Europa League semi-finals.
Unai Emery’s men overturned a 1-0 first-leg deficit to defeat Nottingham Forest 4-1 on aggregate and secure a place in the Europa League final.
Villa will now face German side Freiburg in Istanbul on May 20 as they chase European silverware under Emery’s leadership.
Crystal Palace Reach Conference League Final
Crystal Palace completed the historic English clean sweep after beating Shakhtar Donetsk 2-1 at Selhurst Park to seal a 5-2 aggregate victory in the UEFA Conference League semi-finals.
The Eagles had already taken control of the tie with a 3-1 away win in the first leg and will now face Spanish side Rayo Vallecano in the final on May 27.
It marks a major achievement for Palace, who are competing on the European stage for the first time in the club’s history.
Premier League Continues European Dominance
This is the first time English clubs have reached the finals of all three UEFA competitions in a single season.
English teams have previously dominated European football in certain years, including 2019 when Liverpool defeated Tottenham in the Champions League final while Chelsea beat Arsenal in the Europa League final.
A similar feat almost happened last season, but Arsenal failed to progress beyond the Champions League semi-finals.
Italy Previously Won All Three Competitions
Italian clubs remain the only teams to have won all three available European competitions in one season.
During the 1989-90 campaign, AC Milan won the European Cup, Juventus lifted the UEFA Cup, and Sampdoria claimed the Cup Winners’ Cup in a golden era for Serie A football.
The UEFA Conference League, Europe’s third-tier club competition, was introduced five years ago following the discontinuation of the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1999.
