Morocco Beat South Africa 2–1 to Reach WAFCON Semi-Finals and Qualify for 2027 Women’s World Cup

The Atlas Lionesses have done it again! Morocco defeated defending champions South Africa 2–1 in a thrilling TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2026 quarter-final to reach the semi-finals and secure their place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

Playing in front of their home supporters in Rabat, Morocco produced a determined performance to overcome the reigning African champions and keep their dream of winning a first WAFCON title alive.

Morocco 2–1 South Africa

Morocco took control of the contest and were rewarded with the opening goal before Hanan Ait El Haj doubled their advantage from the penalty spot in the 51st minute.

South Africa, however, refused to surrender.

Thembi Kgatlana pulled one back for Banyana Banyana in the 67th minute, setting up a tense final period as the defending champions searched for an equaliser.

Morocco held firm, protecting their 2–1 advantage until the final whistle to secure a place in the last four.

World Cup Ticket Secured

The victory carries an even bigger reward.

By reaching the WAFCON semi-finals, Morocco have automatically qualified for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

The qualification means the Atlas Lionesses will make their second appearance at the FIFA Women’s World Cup, following their historic debut at the 2023 tournament. CAF confirmed before the quarter-finals that the four WAFCON semi-finalists would secure automatic qualification for Brazil 2027.

Revenge Against the Defending Champions

The victory also carries an emotional significance for Morocco.

South Africa defeated Morocco 2–1 in the 2022 WAFCON final, denying the hosts their first continental championship.

Four years later, the Atlas Lionesses have turned the tables.

This time, it was Morocco who emerged victorious in a crucial knockout encounter in Rabat, sending Banyana Banyana out of the competition and advancing to the semi-finals.

Morocco’s WAFCON Dream Continues

Morocco entered the knockout stage as Group A winners after collecting seven points and completing the group stage without conceding a goal.

They defeated Kenya and Algeria before playing out a goalless draw with Senegal.

Now, after eliminating the defending champions, Morocco are just two victories away from becoming African champions for the first time.

The Atlas Lionesses have reached the WAFCON final twice before, finishing runners-up in 2022 and again in the previous edition.

This time, however, they will be determined to go all the way.

South Africa’s Title Defence Ends

For South Africa, the defeat brings their title defence to an end.

Banyana Banyana had struggled during the group stage, losing their opening match against Tanzania before drawing with Côte d’Ivoire and beating Burkina Faso to reach the quarter-finals.

Against Morocco, they showed character after falling two goals behind, with Kgatlana’s strike giving them hope.

But the equaliser never came.

South Africa’s campaign is over, while Morocco march into the semi-finals and Brazil 2027.

Morocco Join Algeria in the Semi-Finals

Morocco’s victory means the hosts join Algeria among the first two confirmed semi-finalists of WAFCON 2026.

Algeria earlier defeated Côte d’Ivoire 2–1 to reach the last four and qualify for their first-ever FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The remaining quarter-final matches will determine the other two semi-finalists.

Defending champions Nigeria face Cameroon, while Ghana take on surprise package Malawi.

The Road to Brazil 2027

The WAFCON 2026 knockout stage is serving as Africa’s pathway to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Four African nations will qualify directly by reaching the WAFCON semi-finals, while two additional teams will have another opportunity through the inter-confederation play-off route.

For Morocco, the dream of returning to the world stage is now a reality.

The Atlas Lionesses are in the WAFCON semi-finals.

Morocco are going to Brazil 2027.

And with the home crowd behind them, the biggest question now is:

Can Morocco finally win the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations on home soil?
