France Edge Paraguay to Reach FIFA World Cup 2026 Quarter-finals

France have secured their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals after battling past a resilient Paraguay side with a hard-fought 1-0 victory in the Round of 16.

A second-half penalty converted by captain Kylian Mbappé proved to be the difference as Didier Deschamps’ side overcame one of the tournament’s surprise packages. While France dominated possession throughout the contest, Paraguay’s disciplined defensive display ensured Les Bleus had to work tirelessly for their victory. France will now face Morocco in what promises to be one of the standout quarter-final clashes of the tournament.

France’s Tactical Performance

France lined up in their familiar attacking system despite the absence of injured midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni, who was replaced by Manu Koné. Didier Deschamps trusted his team’s technical quality and attacking depth to break down Paraguay’s compact defence.

Les Bleus dominated possession for long spells, patiently circulating the ball across midfield before looking for openings through the pace of Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé and Bradley Barcola.

Full-backs Jules Koundé and Lucas Digne pushed high up the pitch to stretch Paraguay’s back five, while Adrien Rabiot and Manu Koné controlled the midfield battle.

Although France created numerous opportunities, Paraguay’s defensive organisation forced them into several difficult shooting positions. Eventually, a VAR review awarded France a penalty after Désiré Doué was brought down inside the area, allowing Mbappé to calmly convert from the spot.

Paraguay’s Defensive Masterclass

Despite the defeat, Paraguay earned widespread praise for their tactical discipline.

Coach Gustavo Alfaro deployed a deep 5-4-1 formation designed to frustrate France’s star-studded attack. The South Americans defended in numbers, limiting space between the lines and forcing France to play around rather than through them.

Captain Gustavo Gómez marshalled the defence superbly, while Andrés Cubas and Diego Gómez worked tirelessly in midfield to break up French attacks.

Whenever possession was regained, Paraguay attempted quick counter-attacks through Miguel Almirón and Julio Enciso. However, France’s central defensive pairing of William Saliba and Dayot Upamecano comfortably dealt with most of the danger.

Although Paraguay exited the tournament, their disciplined performances throughout the World Cup—including eliminating Germany in the previous round—earned admiration from football fans around the world.

Key Players

Kylian Mbappé once again proved decisive, scoring the winning goal and constantly threatening Paraguay’s defence with his pace and movement.

Manu Koné impressed after replacing the injured Tchouaméni, bringing energy and composure to France’s midfield.

William Saliba delivered another commanding defensive performance, helping France keep a clean sheet.

For Paraguay, Gustavo Gómez, Andrés Cubas and goalkeeper Orlando Gill produced outstanding displays despite the defeat.

Man of the Match

Kylian Mbappé was the standout performer, scoring the decisive penalty and leading France’s attack throughout the match. His leadership and composure in a tense knockout encounter once again underlined why he remains one of the world’s best players.

France March On

France continue to justify their status as one of the favourites to lift the FIFA World Cup trophy. While Paraguay tested their patience with an outstanding defensive display, Les Bleus showed maturity, tactical discipline and resilience to secure victory.

With a mouth-watering quarter-final against Morocco now on the horizon, Didier Deschamps’ men know even greater challenges await as they continue their pursuit of another World Cup crown.
