However, Argentina once again demonstrated why they are the reigning world champions.
With just over 10 minutes remaining, Cristian Romero ignited the comeback in the 79th minute, heading home from a pinpoint Messi cross to give La Albiceleste hope. Four minutes later, Messi redeemed his earlier penalty miss by firing home the equaliser after a slick attacking move, sending the Argentine supporters into delirium.
As extra time appeared inevitable, Argentina delivered the decisive blow in stoppage time. Midfielder Enzo Fernández rose highest to head home the winning goal in the 92nd minute, completing an extraordinary turnaround and sealing a memorable 3-2 victory.
The victory keeps Argentina’s dream of successfully defending their World Cup crown alive. It also marked another inspirational performance from Messi, who finished with a goal and an assist despite the disappointment of his missed penalty earlier in the contest.
For Egypt, the defeat was heartbreaking. The North Africans produced a disciplined display for much of the match and looked destined for a historic quarter-final appearance before Argentina’s late surge shattered their hopes. Mohamed Salah and his teammates can nevertheless leave the tournament with pride after an impressive campaign that included a historic first-ever World Cup knockout-stage victory over Australia in the previous round.
Argentina will now face the winner of the Switzerland versus Colombia Round of 16 clash as they continue their pursuit of back-to-back FIFA World Cup titles.
