FULL TIME IN CARDIFF: ARSENAL ARE THE 2026 COMMUNITY SHIELD CHAMPIONS!
Arsenal have opened the 2026/27 campaign in emphatic fashion, beating Manchester City 3–0 at the Principality Stadium to lift the first major piece of silverware of the new season.
And this was much more than a trophy win.
It was a performance that offered an early glimpse of how Arsenal have evolved since winning their first Premier League title in 22 years.
⚡ A DREAM START
Arsenal needed only 24 seconds to take the lead.
Riccardo Calafiori finished after a brilliant reverse pass from Myles Lewis-Skelly, giving Arsenal the fastest goal in Community Shield history.
Then came Kai Havertz, heading home a superb delivery from new signing Christos Tzolis to make it 2–0.
After the break, Martin Ødegaard completed the rout with Arsenal’s third.
Arsenal 3–0 Manchester City.
The scoreline reflected a performance in which Arsenal were sharper, more aggressive and more coherent in almost every department.
🧱 THE ARSENAL DEFENCE DESERVES HUGE CREDIT
While the goals will dominate the headlines, Arsenal’s defensive performance was arguably just as impressive.
David Raya produced important saves to deny Phil Foden and Antoine Semenyo, while the back line remained organised and aggressive against Erling Haaland and City’s attack.
The starting defence of:
Ben White – Cristhian Mosquera – Gabriel – Riccardo Calafiori
gave Arteta a combination of experience, physicality and versatility.
And Cristhian Mosquera, in particular, deserves attention.
With William Saliba unavailable, the new arrival stepped into one of the biggest tests possible — against Manchester City — and Arsenal kept a clean sheet.
Calafiori was also influential at both ends of the pitch, scoring the opener and helping Arsenal maintain control from the left.
This is important for the new season.
Arsenal are no longer simply dependent on one defensive combination.
They have options.
🧠 THE MIDFIELD REVOLUTION
Perhaps the most fascinating part of Arsenal’s performance was the midfield.
Arteta started with:
ØDEGAARD – LEWIS-SKELLY – BRUNO GUIMARÃES
And that combination worked.
Bruno Guimarães made his full competitive Arsenal debut after arriving from Newcastle and immediately brought intensity, physicality and composure into the centre of the pitch. Arsenal’s official team news confirmed both Bruno and Tzolis were making their full competitive debuts.
Lewis-Skelly was equally important.
His reverse pass created the opening goal, while his ability to operate centrally gave Arsenal another dimension.
Then there was Ødegaard.
The captain looked influential between the lines and capped the performance with Arsenal’s third goal.
But the biggest story may be what happens when Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi are added to this midfield competition.
Arsenal suddenly have:
Bruno Guimarães
Declan Rice
Martin Zubimendi
Martin Ødegaard
Myles Lewis-Skelly
That is an enormous amount of quality and tactical flexibility.
⭐ NEW SIGNINGS: ARSENAL’S DEBUTANTS IMPRESS
🇧🇷 BRUNO GUIMARÃES
The Brazilian’s first competitive appearance was one of the biggest talking points.
He looked comfortable in Arsenal’s midfield and showed why his arrival was viewed as a major statement signing. The Premier League described him as one of Arsenal’s major summer additions.
The only concern is that Bruno was withdrawn at half-time, with reports later showing him with an ice pack on his leg. Declan Rice replaced him.
🇬🇷 CHRISTOS TZOLIS
What a debut.
Tzolis started on the left and immediately looked dangerous.
His delivery for Havertz’s goal was excellent, while his movement and directness gave Arsenal another attacking outlet.
The Greek winger arrived from Club Brugge after an outstanding campaign in Belgium, where he registered 17 goals and 23 assists.
Against City, he looked like a player who could become extremely important for Arteta.
🔵 MANCHESTER CITY’S NEW ERA BEGINS WITH A DEFEAT
For Manchester City, this was always going to be about more than the result.
It was the beginning of the post-Pep Guardiola era.
Enzo Maresca is now responsible for guiding City into a new chapter, and his first competitive match against Arsenal provided a brutally difficult examination.
City struggled to find their rhythm, particularly against Arsenal’s midfield pressure and defensive organisation.
New signing Elliot Anderson started in midfield, while Antoine Semenyo also started in attack.
Both showed flashes, but Arsenal’s structure made it difficult for City’s new-look side to impose itself.
And then there is Rayan Cherki.
The highly creative French attacker came on during the second half, but by then Arsenal had already established complete control.
👨🏫 ARTETA vs MARESCA: TWO PRODUCTS OF THE GUARDIOLA SCHOOL
There was another fascinating storyline behind this final.
Mikel Arteta and Enzo Maresca are both part of Pep Guardiola’s coaching tree.
Arteta worked directly alongside Guardiola at Manchester City before becoming Arsenal manager.
Maresca also developed within City’s coaching structure before beginning his own managerial journey.
Now, with Guardiola no longer on the City touchline, two coaches shaped by the same football philosophy stood opposite each other for the first trophy of the new English season.
And today, Arteta won the battle.
Before the match, Arteta praised Maresca’s quality and said he had the character and knowledge to succeed at City.
But on the pitch, Arsenal’s version of that Guardiola-inspired football was clearly more effective.
🔴⚪ WHAT HAS CHANGED AT ARSENAL?
This is the biggest question coming out of Cardiff.
1️⃣ MORE MIDFIELD POWER
Bruno adds another level of physicality and ball progression.
2️⃣ MORE ATTACKING OPTIONS
Tzolis and Madueke give Arsenal additional width and directness.
3️⃣ MORE DEFENSIVE DEPTH
Mosquera’s performance suggests Arsenal have another serious centre-back option.
4️⃣ MORE TACTICAL FLEXIBILITY
Arteta can now change the midfield depending on the opponent.
5️⃣ MORE COMPETITION
Saka, Rice, Zubimendi and other established stars did not need to start this match.
That is a powerful sign of Arsenal’s squad depth.
6️⃣ THE HUNGER IS STILL THERE
After finally winning the Premier League last season, there were questions about whether Arsenal could maintain the same hunger.
Today’s answer was emphatic:
YES.
Arteta himself had stressed before the match that his squad remained highly motivated and physically prepared.
🏆 ARSENAL START 2026/27 WITH SILVERWARE
The Community Shield does not decide the Premier League.
It does not guarantee Arsenal will retain their title.
But it does something important.
It sends a message.
Arsenal have not come into this season satisfied with what they achieved last year.
They have strengthened.
They have added competition.
They have added midfield quality.
They have added attacking variety.
And today they dismantled one of their biggest rivals.

Arsenal are not defending their crown.
They are coming for more. 🔴⚪🔥
